Fuerteventura  -  about the Island...

The second largest and by far the least commercialised of all the major Canary Islands, being twice the size of Lanzarote with only half the population. The geographical location of the island, some sixty miles off the west coast of Africa, ensures an average daytime temperature of 75°F all year round.

Like Lanzarote, the island is volcanic with very little rainfall to encourage natural vegetation, making the inland landscape 'lunar' in appearance and generally arid and barren with a few farmhouses and small villages scattered amongst the red, flat topped mountains.

The most attractive features of the island are the miles of magnificent unspoilt beaches, many of which have been declared 'national park'. In the north, at Corralejo, you will find vast areas of sand dunes leading down to a seven mile coastline of near deserted, golden, almost white, sandy beaches. Fuerteventura is indeed a desert island haven for people seeking a totally relaxed and lazy beach holiday.

Corralejo
Until recently Corralejo was just a sleepy fishing village providing a ferry link to Lanzarote. The town is now beginning to grow and offers some excellent self catering accommodation close to the beaches. The town centre has developed over the years but still retains much of its original charm and character.

You will find a good selection of restaurants, bars and nightspots as well as a number of shops including supermarkets and boutiques. Just a few kilometres south, amidst the white sands of 'Las Dunas', stand the two hotels 'Tres Islas' and 'Oliva-Beach' which add to the night life of Corralejo.

Corralejo is rapidly becoming established as a windsurfing centre for enthusiasts as the seas around offer some of the best conditions available.

A tiny fishing village in the north, being extremely picturesque with white beaches, natural lagoons and excellent typical fish restaurants.

Old town including Colonels House once the residence of the island’s military governor.

Old capital, many buildings of worthy note including Church of Santa Maria.

New capital where most of the population live and most of the military are based.
